Meet Temitope Ajayi-Salami, the inspiring founder of AYT Foods, an Afro-Caribbean food products store in Fife.

Q1: What inspired you to start your business, and what keeps you motivated?

I started AYT Foods because I saw a real need for Afro-Caribbean food products in Fife, especially for the ethnic minority community. Coming from Nigeria, food is such a big part of our culture, and having access to familiar ingredients brings comfort and a sense of belonging. My biggest motivation has been creating a space where others feel at home, while also introducing our culture to more people. Seeing the joy on my customers’ faces and hearing how the store has made a difference in their lives keeps me going.

Q2: What challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges has been sourcing authentic products and managing logistics. There were times when shipments were delayed or products were out of stock, which affected customer satisfaction. To handle this, I built strong relationships with suppliers, created a network of backup options, and started planning well in advance. Another challenge has been balancing the demands of running the business on my own. Being the only team member meant long hours and handling every aspect, but prioritizing tasks and delegating when possible has helped.

Q3: Any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs, especially women?

My advice is to start small but think big. Don’t be afraid to take the first step, even if you don’t have everything figured out. Surround yourself with people who believe in your vision. For women especially, don’t let self-doubt or societal expectations hold you back. There’s so much potential within you, and sometimes the biggest leap is just believing in yourself. Persistence is key; there will be setbacks, but stay focused on your purpose, and always keep learning and adapting.

Q4: How has your Small Powerful Group and WEvolution supported you?

The SPG and WEvolution community have been tremendous sources of emotional support and practical advice. It’s a space where I can share my challenges and successes without judgement, and I never feel alone in this journey. The group is filled with like-minded people who genuinely care, and we lift each other up. WEvolution has also opened doors to new opportunities, partnerships, and networking, which have been invaluable for growing AYT Foods.
