Belonging is healing
You likely know this already, but we won’t stop banging on about it: we believe in the transformative power of connection. And on World Mental Health Day, we’re reminded of how vital it is to have spaces where trust, belonging, and genuine relationships thrive.
Feeling Connected Matters
In a world that can often feel isolating, being part of a tight-knit community can make all the difference. Our groups are about more than just gathering — they’re about creating spaces where women lift each other up, share their stories, and offer the kind of support that helps us face our challenges head-on.
Our model comes from a powerful group model originating in India.
Self-Help Groups (SHGs) have been instrumental in empowering women, especially in rural areas, by fostering financial independence and social support. These groups, typically comprising 10–20 women, meet regularly to save money, provide micro-loans, and offer mutual support. But beyond economic benefits, SHGs create a vital sense of community and belonging, helping women combat isolation, improve their mental health, and build self-confidence. These groups are often tied to the larger Self-Help Group Movement, which has gained international recognition for its grassroots impact on mental well-being.
Another example is Hearing Voices Networks (Global) The Hearing Voices Network (HVN), founded in the Netherlands and now global, provides peer support groups for people who hear voices, see visions, or experience other unusual sensory perceptions. These groups offer a non-judgmental space where participants can share their experiences, connect with others who understand, and reduce feelings of isolation. HVN shifts the focus from medicalizing these experiences to providing support through open dialogue. By normalizing what is often stigmatised, these groups help individuals reclaim their sense of agency and improve their mental well-being through mutual understanding.
